Why did I write this book? So many people have suggested, persisted, even offered to write this book; from my friend RJ, to my god-brother Cloyed and many more. But my response would be about the same, “yes my story would be awesome to read, but I just don’t have the time (didn’t feel like taking the time either) to sit down and write a book — especially one that revolved around talking about me.” I can’t stand talking about myself. It wasn’t until Nov 17, 2017, that I met up with Kevin LeRonde (Former CEO at Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons), who I met through a Fields of Faith speaking engagement hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). During a two-hour fellowship, he said he would love to hear about what the thought process of a world class athlete was like. I joked that that’s a place that nobody wants to go no matter how intriguing they think it would be; it’s a maze of intense, varied emotions which feel like chess and Sudoku, where the winner and loser are playing for lives and sanity. He then went on to say “man you need to write a book,” to which I automatically began my engrained speech of excuses. He pressed further, “ok, but if for nothing else, write so you can leave something for your kids to know you by.” It was like that comment shot straight to my heart, past all the walls and traps. For my kids, Naomi and Malachi? My thoughts began to race about how what their thoughts would be, “Who and what was their daddy really like, before they were really aware? Was he really like everyone describes him to be, and is that the same or different to how I know him to be?” So, I began the process of writing a chapter a day and that journey birthed a three-year process.
